Previously, they would send messages via WhatsApp or SMS to deceive their victims. Scammers posing as job offers on TikTok have changed their tactics by incorporating phone calls into their ruse.
This is their current modus operandi:
- Initial call: The victim receives a call with a recorded message offering a seemingly lucrative job of watching TikTok videos and sending screenshots in exchange for an unlimited daily income. The phone number used for the call impersonates that of a legitimate olive oil company in Jaén, making the scam difficult to detect.
- WhatsApp invitation: The victim receives a recorded message inviting them to add the scammers as contacts on WhatsApp. If the victim accepts, the conversation will begin.
- Deceptive Promises: However, these promises are false and users should be cautious of such scams. Scammers on WhatsApp continue to deceive users by promising daily payments for watching TikTok videos and sending screenshots. The promised figures can vary from €50 to €400 per day.
- No Initial Written Interaction: Unlike previous versions, they no longer initiate conversations via written messages on WhatsApp or SMS. The recorded call is their calling card.
Protecting Yourself:
- Be wary of Unknown Callers: when receiving calls from unknown numbers offering job opportunities, it is important to be cautious and do your research before committing yourself.
- Don't Share Sensitive Data: Do not share personal or banking information with strangers, especially through calls or messages.
- Verify the source: Always verify the authenticity of job offers. Look for information about the company and contact them directly through official channels to ensure that the job offer is genuine.
