If you have a Netflix account, pay attention to suspicious emails. The Guardia Civil has warned about a new phishing scam that mimics Netflix in order to steal personal and banking data.
The National Institute of Cybersecurity (INCIBE) reports that scammers send emails with alarming subject lines such as 'Last reminder before account closure'. These messages seek to create urgency and panic, pushing the user to act hastily.
The fraudulent emails pretend to be from Netflix, claiming subscription renewal problems due to payment failures. Users are urged to follow a link that leads to a fake page, identical to Netflix's, where they are asked to fill out a form with personal and banking information.
If you fall into the trap, you will believe that you are solving a problem with your account and that you will soon be able to enjoy your favorite series and movies. However, you will be handing over your valuable data to cybercriminals.
Both the Guardia Civil and INCIBE offer advice on how to protect yourself:
- Monitor your bank account movements to detect and cancel unauthorized charges.
- Collect evidence of the fraud, such as emails and screenshots.
- Report the incident to the State Security Forces with the evidence in hand.
- Perform egosurfing to check if your information has been leaked and exercise the right to be forgotten for its elimination.
- If in doubt, consult the Netflix help page to verify the authenticity of the emails.
Be vigilant and protect your personal and financial information from these scams.
