The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has confirmed that it experienced a cyber incident on 16 February, during which 11 of the institution's email accounts were compromised.
Following the attack, the institution, led by Kristalina Georgieva, conducted an investigation with the help of independent cybersecurity experts. The nature of the breach was determined, and corrective measures were taken. The email accounts that were affected have been re-secured, and there is no evidence of any further compromise beyond these accounts. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
The IMF places great importance on preventing and defending against cyber incidents. Although cyber incidents are inevitable, the Washington-based organization continues to work towards safeguarding its digital security.
In 2011, the IMF was the victim of a cyberattack while recovering from the crisis triggered by the resignation of Dominique Strauss-Kahn as managing director. The World Bank temporarily cut its network connection with the IMF during the attack.
